Amsterdam, one of the most popular city break destinations…ever! Since moving here, I have definitely been to a good few places that I would recommend to everyone who visit, so it seems only right that I would share it with all of you.
It’s got to be said, I haven’t been everywhere and I know there are many many more good places to visit but this is what I have found so far…
PLACES TO GO
Want to get a view of the whole city? A’dam look out is the place to go. On a Good day, you can see right across the city but even on a dull day, it’s still worth going. There is also the Swing that swings out over the edge of the building (I haven’t done it myself but I my boyfriend has) which is good for those thrill seekers.
As I am writing this, I haven’t actually yet been to the Anne Frank House BUT I have heard it is amazing and it’s on my list to visit at some point. Just to note, you do have to book really in advance so please mind that before booking your trip.
If you’re a fan of Heineken this is definitely the place for you! Its quite a cool experience but I personally didn’t particularly think it was worth the money. The first half is really interesting as you learn about how the beer is made but the second half is a bit naff.
This museum is SO good if you’re into your modern art and has so much Banksy work on display. It’s worth it just for that. 100% recommend going
This is one of those museums that I wouldn’t particularly choose to go into but if you’re interested in the human body and learning about how happiness is the best thing for the human body then you’ll love it. At the end you get to do a body test to see how much body fat etc you have (you literally stand on something and it works it out for you) I actually thought it was quite interesting but its not the cheapest experience!
If you’re an alcohol fan/love a cocktail, this is well worth visiting. The museum takes you through the creation of Bols Liquor and at the end you get a free cocktail which is pretty good. Its reasonably priced and the cocktail at the end was amazing!!
There is SO many boat tours out there so do your research before you choose which one to spend your money on. There are a lot of typically tourist boats but there are also some really cool less in your face tourist boats which I would definitely recommend. The one we have done was by THOSE DAM BOAT GUYS which was really chill and you can take your own alcohol onto the boat with you which is a bonus.
Jordaan is the prettiest part of Amsterdam and if you’re wanting to get that Insta shot then you need to head to this area. It’s beautiful and honestly my favourite place to wonder around. It’s full of shops, little cute cafe’s and bars as well as lots beautiful scenery.
This is the famous park of Amsterdam and its beautiful! Even in the winter it’s just a lovely park to walk around and in the summer it’s even better. Worth having a walk around or even a cycle through.
PLACES TO EAT & DRINK
I love the Chicken Bar. They do such a good chicken burger which I get every time I go as it’s so tasty. They also go ribs which Alex gets every time and couldn’t recommend enough! Honestly worth going if you’re a fan of chicken.
This burger restaurant is Wizard of OZ themed but in a Gatsby kind of way. The interiors are amazing and so are the burgers for that matter. It’s located near the Rijk Museum and the Van Gough museum so definitely one to go to for lunch if you’re in that area.
If you’re a fan of toasties, you need to go here!! This is one of my favourite restaurants/cafes that I have come across. It’s a very cute little cafe that sells the tastiest toasties and I have to stop myself going there, it’s that good. It is very small so if you’re going to go, make sure you go before it gets too busy!
Are you a fan of beer? Then you will love this place. They sell amazingly tasty beers and have monkey nuts (peanuts) everywhere for you to open and eat whilst drinking. Sounds strange but honestly so so so worth going, even if its just for a drink. They do also have a restaurant but I haven’t tested that out yet but I can imagine its pretty good!
One of the most instagramable places you will ever go to. Its honestly the cutest little cafe and sells the tastiest food. If you’re a fan of a chicken burger, I would 100% recommend going here and trying it. It’s honestly the best chicken burger I have ever had. It’s so so so good.
Pluk is the sister cafe to Ree7 and does more or less pretty similar food and drink. Just as instagramable and just as cute. Just be careful if you’re wanting to go here as it’s always always busy.
This is probably my favourite burger place we have come across so far. The burgers are insane and so incredibly tasty. They have a few dotted about the city and a huge one next to the A’dam look out so if you’re heading that way, it’s a good place to go for lunch.
This pizza restaurant is so typically italian and honestly the best Pizza I have had in Amsterdam…so far. If you love a rustic homemade style pizza, you’ll love it here. It is a very casual style restaurant but well worth going to.
This is quite literally the most insatgramable restaurant I have been to so far! Its all vegan and honestly (coming from a non vegan) it was amazing! Highly recommend! One thing to note it’s ALWAYS busy so the best time to go is just before peak times so that you don’t have to wait in the queue.
This area is FULL of bars, cafes and restaurants. If you’re ever stuck with somewhere to go, this area is always a good one.
PLACES TO SHOP
If you’re looking to do some shopping whilst your in Amsterdam and want to go somewhere you can’t get anywhere else, I recommend De Bijenkof, it’s essentially the Netherlands version of Selfridges but it’s really nice to wonder around as it’s different to the shops back home.
As I briefly mentioned before, there is lots of cute shops in Jordaan. Lots of independents shops as well as well known shops. If you’re going to this area, you’ll most likely find yourself wondering into various cute little shops. Such a lovely area to shop in.
