Creating the Smart casual look seems straight forward, right? well yes I guess it is but it can be quite difficult knowing what pieces you need to create the look. You may be a super casual dresser or maybe you live on a smart wardrobe. I for one am a very casual dresser and often look for pieces to add to my wardrobe which give that smart vibe to a look. If its not a blazer, its a pair of smart trousers but giving them a casual vibe is the part which can be a little tricky.
I feel like I have started to master the smart casj look and I felt it would be silly not to share my tips and tricks on how to get the right mix of smart and casual.
What you need…..to create a smart casj wardrobe
we’ll start with the smart items. Some of these you might already have, some you wont. these are just the type of item to go for. Add the pieces that work best for you and your style.
smart trousers – black are easiest to style but any colour of smart trousers do the sam job
smart shirt or blouse
smart shoes such as brogues, loafers
smart coat such as a pea coat
casual pieces – These are things that you will most likely already have in your wardrobe.
oversized knitwear or just knitwear in general
Smart casual is basically what it says on the tin so you ideally just want to mix the two into a new outfit. For instance if you work in an office and have a smart work wardrobe but you want to get more use out of those pieces adding a few casual pieces into the mix will make those items wearable for a casual Saturday out with the girls.
Blazer, jeans, thin knit
I’ll start with the outfit shown in the photos for this post. I bought this blazer which is quite a smart piece and I wanted to style it in an easy wearable way. An easy way to casual up a blazer is to pop on a pair of jeans and in this case I have added a thin turtle neck cream knit which has a smart element to it but is given the casual vibe with the jeans. equally, you could pop on a t shirt which would give more of a casual look. This look is giving more of a smarter vibe especially as I have finished it off with a pair of heeled boots but you could add a pair of trainers which again would make this outfit more of a casual vibe. So instead of jeans, blazer, thin knit and boots go for blazer, jeans, t shirt and trainers.
T shirt, smart trousers, trainers
leading on from the last outfit idea. this one is very similar. The best way to make a pair of smart trousers causal is to throw on a t shirt and if you’re wanting to make the look fashion forward go for a graphic tee. Perhaps something with a slogan on the front, adds a little bit of fun to the look too. Adding trainers will keep the look fashion forward and casual for day to day but if trainers aren’t your thing pop on a pair of shoes which fit your style better.
Jeans, jumper, smart shoes
Smart shoes are probably the easiest item to style as they tend to go with most items. Especially if you’re going for a shoe such as a loafer. They go equally with jeans and trousers. Jeans, jumper and a pair of smart shoes is quite a casual look but you could go for a t shirt/jumper trousers and smart shoes for more of a smarter vibe.
Getting the right mix between smart and casual is purely down to the look you want to create. if you want to be more on the smarter side then stick to your smart pieces and add items such as a t shirt or a pair of jeans. If you want to be more on the casual side, add pieces such a a smart pair of trousers or some smart shoes. make your smart causal wardrobe whatever you want it to be. Take this outfit I am wearing for example. If you switch out the thin knit for a t shirt, you’ve instantly got more of a casual outfit. Its about experimenting and switching out the items for something smarter or more casual.
Give it a go, whats the worst that could happen? you go for an outfit you already know you love instead?
