This week has a been a busy one at work and is the reason why my blog has been put on hold for a little. I am currently working very hard at work to get our store set up for the model store sign off. For those of you who don’t have a clue what I am talking about…Model store is essentially the change of season. So its all about AW17 and we have to change the store around and do it to the pack we have been given. This might be layout, trends, items that go together, placement of certain trends. Basically the big dogs of Topshop decide how they want the store to look for the new season…choose one store to create this look and then all the other stores have to create their version of that store…am I making sense? I don’t even know.
Its been a very busy week working on Topshop model store and next week we’ll be working on Topman. Its all very exciting and has actually been a lot of fun so far. very sleepy from it but still fun. So hopefully this VM diaries will be a little bit more interesting than normal.
Sunday 20th – THE BIG MOVE
It all started with us having to move about 40 shelves, all the bags, fixtures, clothes and all sorts from floor to floor to get the certain items into their new spot. I was in charge of bags and I can’t express how long it look me to get all of these shelves and bags up stairs. In the life out the lift. down the stairs up the stairs. Genuinely like a gym work out…that was how much we had to move. It was a night of just getting everything into its new place. Didn’t have to be done perfectly as we would be revisiting it but it just had to be in.
I was actually really excited to have bags as one of my jobs as I kinda find it therapeutic. It’s really satisfying. I really do have to admit it looks awful but considering I was deffo half asleep I don’t think it is too bad.
There are 3 statements within bags which I kept to. You have rock girl, stylist girl and pretty girl. These are the 3 trends for AW and the bag statements go with the trends. However the idea of the bag wall is to showcase the bags we sell and show that you can wear any of these bags with whatever your style is.
This statement is what is known as pretty. like I said not all of these bags fit into a certain trend but these are designed to go with the pretty trend. Its all things faux fur this AW so Topshop have literally gone ham on the amount of fur detailed bags and I am loving it! Im looking forward to adding a splash of faux fur into my AW wardrobe. This statement is probably the most desirable as all the bags are very neutral which means they’ll go with everything in your wardrobe.
This is the stylist statement. So this includes more of your smarter bags, work wear kinda feel but again can we worn with any outfit for whatever occasion. This statement is probably the hardest as their is so many colours and they just don’t look right together. I really struggled with this one and I just couldn’t get it to look right but I am re doing it so it doesn’t matter too much.
This statement is the Rock girl statement and this is by far my favourite. I am a huge fan of the rock chick look so when it comes back into fashion I’m all about it. Topshop bring Rock girl back at this time of year as its quite a popular trend especially at christmas time. These bags all have some sort of studded detail or colouring that gives that rock chick vibe. Loving all this chain detailing. Im going to have to get my hands on a few of these bags because they are just heavenly.
Here is the overall look for the bag wall. I was actually pretty chuffed with it by the time I had finished it. Wasn’t in love but for the amount of hours I spent on it, it wasn’t too bad.
Monday 21st – ROCKER GIRL
Today was the day we moved all 3 girls/trends into their new spots. Last night we moved the trend that was upstairs into the available space and then today we moved them into their official new spaces. They all moved into a new spot so it was carnage on the shop floor…everything had to be striped off the walls and started again. This trend is actually quite difficult as are all of them to be honest. Making sure its all up to standards we are given is quite difficult but again we were going to have a chance to re visit it so It didn’t need to be perfect.
I completely forgot to take photos of half of the rock trend so you’re only getting half of what I did but this section is my favourite so I wanted to make sure I shared this one with you.
As I have said before…I love this trend and I love all things Rock chick. There are so many cool pieces in this trend. some I am dying to get my hands on others I wouldn’t touch with a barge poll. There are 2 statements in rock girl. The first being Marie Ann which is the gypsy/boho feel mixed with rock chick vibes. So you have a lot of dark florals and feminine pieces mixed with grungey pieces. The second section is more of a harder/tougher rocker girl. This includes more of your brighter colours and edgy pieces mixed in. It has a lot of red running through which is probably what I like the most about it. RED is a big trend this AW and deffo a style that everyone can get into their wardrobes in some sort of way.
It’s all about mixing the dark grungey pieces with the bright bright colour block pieces. Giving the look a more stand out vibe.
This trend is probably the most me trend you’re going to get. Black jeans, leather jackets, distressed denim, graphic tees, dark florals and boots are all right up my street. Topshop have some amazing pieces coming in which are so on trend. I would keep a look out for whats to come with this trend especially if you have a similar style to me.
My final job of the night was to put last chance into its new spot. Last chance is basically the last chance pieces within the store. Im sure you’ve probably come across it at some point. Luckily Sophie had already colour ordered it the pervious night so all I had to do was put it into its new spot.
Its probably one of the mot satisfying things to look at when its all tidy and neat.
Tuesday 22nd – ROCKER GIRL RE WORK
Before I got onto re doing rock I had a couple of other jobs which had to be done. These consisted of swapping last chance to buy with Nobody’s child. Basically they were just going to work better in the opposite spot so that it what I did.
Nobody’s child is possibly one of the hardest trends to make look nice as its all prints so you just have to even out the dark and light prints. Doesn’t look amazing but it will do for the stock that we have. the space works perfectly for the brand though and makes it a lot easier to shop.
After doing last chance to buy last night and making it all neat in its new spot…I had to move it into another new spot and actually I think this one works so much better. The bays in the wall basically mean that you can section the colours off a little bit and actually looks more interesting and put together if you know what I mean.
Now onto re doing rock.
So this is the front section that I was going on about yesterday. The gypsy boho rock chick vibe. I can’t express to you how difficult this was and I really struggled. The stock just doesn’t replicate the trend very well so I was constantly asking my manager for help.
The photo above shows me placing one of each item to see if they will work well together. Once I have decided I am happy with it..I will fill in with the rest of that line.
So that is the final look to rock. Its not amazing and honestly It will probably be looked at again as its just not working. Me and my manger worked on this together and both of us were stuck on it. I think its one of those things that just has to be done wrong before its right. Giving everything a bit of a shuffle round. Its better than it was the day before but its not there just yet. With this job its difficult to be certain with things because youll always want to change something somewhere. I actually really wanted to just re do it there and then but it was the end of the shift so its going to have to wait for another day. I am happy with the accessories as I am the biggest lover of this trend so it was fun to chose the right accessories.
Thursday 24th – BAGS….AGAIN
So as I said at the start of the week…bags would be re done and I am so glad I got to re do it. I am literally so happy with the final look of this wall. Espeically now that the blue lines have been painted out. It looks so much cleaner and gives all the focus on the bags themselves.
I completely swapped everything around. I originally had the pretty bags on the tables and rock next to stylist but they’re such opposite trends that I decided to move rock onto the tables and then kinda mix the pretty and stylist bags together.
The tables just look so much better and work with the rock bags so well. The pops of red work well as they are kept within the tables rather than being everywhere. There is still pops of red within the wall but its a lot less and makes it a lot less over kill and a lot more aesthetically pleasing.
Genuinely so happy with the final outcome of bags. I think it really needed re doing and having fresh eyes on it. It really gave me a chance to be creative and make it properly work. It has a much more premium feel and isn’t so squashed and full. I just love it. Super happy with myself. It’s probably never going to be as tidy as this ever again so lets enjoy the prettiness of all these bags. Well chuffed.
Its been a busy old week and I still have another busy one to come…although I feel like it will be a lot less stressful as it is Topman instead. I apologise for not being around as much on both social media and my blog. There will be lots of new posts coming your way soon….outfit posts will be back I promise but for now its all Visual Merchandising related. I hope thats okay!
See you all soon!
